La Bagatelle—Copenhagen

I met Malene Malling at the Stissing House Craft Feast in December 2025, her two daughters manning the table of exquisite handiwork. Within minutes, we’d traced the overlapping threads of our creative worlds. She described her Taarbæk home outside Copenhagen and the “Bagatel” house by architect Gottlieb Bindesbøll that inspired everything: cupboards of collections and vintage finds, the roots of La Bagatelle before it was a brand.

Malene makes clothing the way most brands have forgotten: piece by piece, made-to-order, in Copenhagen. She built it on one principle, garments for morning meetings to evening dinners without a second thought. Cut locally from French silk velvet, Indian cotton, Japanese wool, or her decades-old textiles, some delivered by bike to Værnedamsvej 3b in Frederiksberg. Her clothes aren’t products; they’re deep knowledge of materials, fit, and real life.

Her Process
Malene crafts made-to-order clothing in Copenhagen: versatile pieces from French silk velvet, Indian cotton, or Japanese wool, delivered by bike. Debuting at Copenhagen Fashion Week SS25 with lace vests and velvet trousers, her work prioritizes wardrobe essentials over fleeting styles. Studio open Thursdays 10–5, Fridays 10–3, select Saturdays; private fittings available.

Why It Matters
Well-made clothes free mental space, resist fast fashion, and gain character through wear, like softening linen or patinated velvet. As daily infrastructure, they enable dignity and presence, much like thoughtful hospitality.
